Allyson is chairing the project. Guest Speaker: Gail from the Illinois Environmental Council talked about energy conservation. The Illinois Climate Action Network is working on legislation for limiting Illinois' impact on global warming. They are trying to pass the Energy Efficient Building Act (SB 526), a Clean Cars Act (HB 3424/SB 2238), a Plan to Reduce Global Warming Pollution (SB 2220/HB 5254). They are looking for an intern to work on Outreach. Gail said that Illinois is the 7th highest contributor to Global Warming. You can also participate in the Illinois Ride for the Environment on the Rolling River on August 16th. The goal for all of these is to conserve significantly by 2020. Ann from the Schaumburg Jaycees came to tell about their involvement in the Cost of Freedom Wall presentations. They will be a dramatic presentation and the Jaycees will be ushering, giving brochures, finding names on computers; they are looking for help from 11:30-3:30 at the Schaumburg Flyers Stadium on Sunday 5/25. They invited us to partner with them if we're interested. Community: -The Best Pizza Contest & Cancer Benefit is Friday at the Schaumburg Township Building. We need people to help. We also need pizza cutters, spatulas, and coolers if you are coming. The Cancer Benefit needs people to sell raffle tickets for $5 apiece or 3 for $10. -Get Out the Vote is to register kids to vote at the high school, but someone needs to get trained for voter registration. We may do it in the fall instead. Richard suggested putting a link on the website to link to the registration website. -The Scholarship applications (2 $500 scholarships for Hoffman Estates seniors) were sent to area newspapers, Hoffman Estates High School, and posted on our website. They will also be out at the Best Pizza Contest. -Village Clean-Up is at 9 a.m. on Saturday. Meet at the Village Hall. -Carnival: We need 5 or more people per shift. Brad & Erin will be visiting area chapters' meetings to request assistance. Committees are forming. June, Brad, & Joanne are working on it. The Village Board approved to waive the general amusement fee (thanks to Richard for attending the meeting for us). Individual Development (Jeremy): -The Mexican Social will be 5/17 at El Matador in Streamwood at 7 p.m. Jeremy is chairing. -Indian Restaurant will probably be in June. Allyson is chairing. -There is a Kenneth Young Walk at Busse Woods on 5/10. If you're interested, call Betty at 847-524-8800. Ann will send more information. -On 4/26 there will be a Competitions Training (public speaking, writing, interviewing, Jaycee Jeopardy, debate) at the Des Plaines Office Center in Elk Grove at 10 a.m. Chairman of the Board/State Director (Erin): Thanks to new members Amy D., Abby, June, Brad, and Allyson for chairing new projects already this year! Our year is looking very good, thanks to the enthusiasm the new members are bringing to the group. Local Directors (June & Chaffee): Be sure to keep inviting people to events or trainings. New Business: Brad suggested having a wing-tasting events at other venues. The Community Resource Center is looking for kids' books and clothes. They are also looking for volunteers and materials that will be detailed in an e-mail. We need to find out when our Rebuilding Together is in Hoffman Estates. Richard will give a number to Louise to contact. Amy D. offered to chair the project. Shirt orders: Joanne suggested buying new polo shirts (navy blue) since we have so many new members. If you are interested in a shirt, let us know your interest & size. Cost is approximately $12. Membership badges are also being ordered (we pay cost). Newsletters: If you are interested in an e-mail newsletter instead of paper newsletters, let Joanne, Amy, Rob, or Erin know. -Shop & Share: We will have Shop & Share at Jewel on Monday, Tuesday, and Wednesday night. Region Report (Richard): -Richard suggested having visitations at other meetings to promote our projects and get to know other people in our region. -The North Region Casino Night is on 4/25 at 6:30 at the Palatine Legion Hall. Cost is $10 if prepaid. -Put brochures about the environment at the carnival. Region Director (Joanne): -Joanne invited everyone out to the Casino Night Regional. -State GA (Decatur, 5/2-5/4) - There will be 10 Outstanding Young Americans & training will be at the state GA. They will be collecting sheets or donations for Camp New Hope at the GA. -Joanne went to the national convention in Memphis. We received the following NATIONAL AWARDS: -Area of Opportunity Business, 3rd Place -2nd Place, Pop. Division 2 Elk Grove and Palatine also won national awards! Keith McClenning and Richard Lewis were two of the 5 Putstanding District Director. Our district won 4th place! Way to go!! Theme Award: Raiders of the Lost Ark: Allyson has attended many events, including the Caribou Social. She will be chairing the upcoming Caribou night and the Indian Restaurant Social. We are looking forward to great things to come from her! We stuffed the bags for the pizza contest.
